Our Nantucket Nursery – One Room Challenge Reveal

Baby Girl, we are ready for you! My first #OneRoomChallenge is complete and I am so in love with our Nantucket inspired nursery! We started the Better Home and Gardens One Room Challenge 8 weeks ago, and now we’re just 4 weeks (or less!) away from welcoming our sweet girl.

There were several road bumps and changes along the way due to Covid-19 delays. Some projects just didn’t happen because they weren’t essential. I’ll probably add a few more tweaks and accessories in the months to come, but my momma heart can rest easy knowing the room is very very very suitable to bring home a baby!

Look at those walls!

The project started off with Daddy and Bubba installing the Board and Batten of my dreams. Everything got a fresh coat of paint and a new Monte Carlo ceiling fan.

The Dresser Saga

I shared all about the up and down journey of the dresser for the room in Week 6’s post. I have to say, I’m glad this project didn’t go as planned because I love the result and the history behind it!

LOVE the “custom” stain color! Minwax Weathered Oak + Minwax Provincial

Every girl needs a tray for her bows, right??

Sweet Dreams, Sweet Girl!

My favorite custom element of the room is by far the buoy covered crib sheet. I’ve been teaching myself how to use Procreate on the iPad for days when I need a quick creative fix but don’t want to make a mess. (It’s part of my “prepare our hearts and home for a baby” plan.)

Once I had the pattern perfected, I ordered the custom sheet on Gooten. It’s buttery soft and definitely adds Nantucket personality! Can’t wait for another pattern project!

The photos above the crib were taken by my husband on our first trip to Nantucket. We weren’t really sure how to fill our vacation days at first, so my husband suggested we rent a Jeep and go “lighthouse hunting”. Maybe one of my favorite vacation memories ever!

I opted for black and white to balance alllll the colors of the buoys.

And the sweet sailboat mobile has been reused from Big Brother’s nursery! Still love it just as much.

All in the details

I shared the story behind this beautiful oceanscape painting for Week 4. Big Brother helped me paint it! I love that he played a part in creating the room. Praying this keeps him excited and eases the transitions to come.

Another sweet piece is this framed postcard from Automatic Seafood & Oyster in Birmingham. I was fortunate to sneak in a girls weekend with my two college besties before the crazy struck. They surprised me with a Baby Brunch and showered our girl with darling outfits!

This postcard accompanied the check, so I asked the Aunties to write a note to Baby Girl on the back. And it matches so well!! The floating frame allows for both sides to be visible. (Tip for special letters and photos you may have!)

Not sentimental, but I have to brag on this lamp…. $35 from Amazon! So perfect for the space!

And of course, I couldn’t create a Nantucket nursery without one of my Nantucket paintings. Cedar shingles and hydrangeas coming right up! I have some other coastal paintings available in my shop!

Keep it practical

I went rather simple with the accessories and plan to switch out a few things once we have family photos and other goodies. For now, practicality wins – but I kind of love using the wire basket to hold all of the blankets! The colors are on point and you ALWAYS need them within an arms reach for “incidents”.

Still to come

Our plantation shutter project is on hold due to Covid, and we didn’t want to put big holes in the walls temporarily for curtains. The wood blinds will do just fine until the fall.

I’m still dreaming up a nautical footstool, but other pre-baby house projects have taken precedence!

And I have an idea for sculpting her name in wire and spray painting gold to hang above the crib…. we’ll see.

Preparing our hearts and home

In the end, I guess the journey of this room is pretty synonymous with parenthood. Especially in the newborn days. You have a vision and a plan for a schedule, how you’ll parent, Kodak moments and being really productive. Then a 7 pound poop machine enters your world and throws all that out the window. You’re left deciding what’s really important in the moment and what can slide. You’re constantly juggling and reconfiguring your routine. And, you’re never 100% sure how things will turn out. Like questioning “how long until this darling outfit becomes the victim of a baby blowout?”

Now that I think of it, we had our own version of a baby blowout as we hung the art – shattered glass and a knocked off crib piece! So yea, this room is pretty darn accurate it!

It’s everything I imagined yet also different in so many ways. When I walk into the room it all just feels right. It’s bright during the day and cozy in the evenings. I think we’ll feel right at home in our new little space. I have countless hours ahead of me sitting in that rocking chair. So thankful I have a pretty room to look at.
