There’s one thing that reigns supreme in our house – trucks! Construction trucks that is. My almost three year old loves ALL THINGS construction trucks, especially truck books. We have found lots of ways to tie speech therapy and toddler learning into our favorite construction truck books!

Little Excavator
Little Excavator by Anna Dewdney arrived as a surprise in the mail! We immediately fell in love with sweet story of the Mighty Little Excavator.
The rhyming prose includes repetitive action words on every other page. The repetition is great for early vocabulary and speech therapy. Pause and let your little verbally finish or act out the action words.
Mighty Dads
Mighty Dads by Joan Holub was one of the first books we purchased for our little guy. In the early days, it was a fun read for his young ears – and great bonding for him and dad! As he got older, it taught the difference of big and small. Ask your kiddos to point to which truck is big/little, larger/smaller, etc.
We didn’t know speech therapy was on our horizon way back then, but I’m sure we had this book on hand! Early in our speech journey we learned the importance of mimicking physical actions, which would eventually lead to verbal mimicking. Each truck offers a different action that we act out with our arms and hands. With time, our son was able to copy our actions as we read along!
Diggersaurs
Diggersaurs by Michael Whaite was a sweet gift when my best friend’s family came to visit. Her boys LOVE dinosaurs, so this was the perfect combination for our two families! My little guy took to the book right away with the colorful pictures and dino-truck characters. There are so many ways to sneak learning into your reading experience with this one.
Each truck is numbered, so you can practice number recognition. Also, each is a different color for color learning. Our favorite way to use it is as a memory matching game! On the final page, all twelve diggersaurs are shown. I ask my son to point to the “Dozersaurus” for example and he points it out. So impressed by the memories of our littles ones!
Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site: Excavator’s 123
Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site: Excavator’s 123 by Sherri Rinker and Ethan Long is a truck book all about numbers!
Every page offers a different construction site object to count. In addition to the counting, you can practice progressing from left to right as you point to each object. This is a helpful skill to instill as it assists with learning to read down the road!
Construction Truck Books for Little Boys
There are so many construction truck books out there – but let’s be honest… not all are fun for the parents to read! Thankfully, these will keep both you and your little one engaged and enjoying the reading experience! What are your favorites?
