No sew, no cut, no tie – no buy! No Christmas tree is complete without a proper tree skirt. But sometimes the cost can be extravagent or you find yourself with a finished tree when you remember you forgot to buy a skirt!
Don’t worry about traipsing around town or the internet to find the perfect tree skirt. Just head to your closet!
What????
Yes!
A beautiful tree skirt is just 3 button down shirts away. You can choose three matching solid colors or 3 plaid or 3 Hawaiian or any 3 that fit your theme.
For our Warm + Cozy Christmas, I’m sticking with 3 neutral shirts. They are all a mens size large. I suggest keeping the same size for a more streamlined skirt.

Directions
1. Lay the unbottoned shirts side by side and button them to each other. In other words, use the buttons on one shirt to attach to the button holes on another.
2. Wrap the three shirts around the base of your tree and connect the two outer shirts, forming the “skirt”.
If you have an artificial tree, you may want to button the collar of each shirt individually to make the opening smaller.
For our live tree with a galvanized cover, I kept them open so the opening would fit.
3. You essentially have a tree skirt at this point, but what should we do with the octopus like arms??? Two options: You can loosely tie the arms of each shirt to each other in a bow or simple not. Or you can tuck them into the skirt, AKA turn them wrong side out.
I opted for the second option for a more simple finished look. And that it! A gorgeous fabric tree skirt in 10 minutes!
When the holiday are over, just unbutton and throw the shirts through the wash. Hang them back up in your closet or pack up for next year!
Now you don’t have to shop your closet for shirts, the point is you can. I purchased these coordinating shirts from the thrift store for $2 each.
A sentimental touch
The holidays bring a lot of joy along with occasional grief as we celebrate years without special loved ones. By using shirts from family members who have passed, we are able to continue to include them in our holiday celebrations. What a lovely nod to the patriarchs of our families!
